The Chiefs and people of the Asougyaman constituency of the Eastern Region have greatly welcomed the recent announcement of Mr. Pius Enam Hadzide as the new Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority. Speaking to this newspaper, the Assembly Member for the Anyansu Electoral Area who doubles as a teacher at Apegusu Senior High School, Hon Francis Kwabena Boafo said they were excited that Pius was appointed by the President to what he describes as a sensitive portfolio. According to the Assembly member the youth are in the majority in Ghana and their problems are enormous. To be appointed therefore to lead the development and empowerment of the youth is not a small feat. “For us in Asuogyaman, we feel that the President has recognized the hard works of the young man coupled with his credentials and has therefore decided to appoint him. That makes us very very proud. Pius is from here, we consider him a father, a brother and a friend. We congratulate him and we thank the President but we are also expecting many more he added amidst laughter.

On the streets of Atimpoku the District capital, there was a lot of joy as this newspaper spoke to a number of “abolo” sellers at the Atimpoku roundabout. Some staff of the District Assembly that we spoke also expressed their satisfaction with the President’s choice and hoped that it would find expression in output on the ground especially in Asuogyaman. Alexander Orbisin, a Government Appointee of the District Assembly and Monitoring and Evaluation Officer of the YEA who describes himself as a friend to Pius said he was confident that Pius would deliver much to the admiration of everybody. “We all know Pius, he is humble and ready to learn. He is a youth himself but quite determined and with great drive. We in Asougyaman expect nothing else than success and we want him to touch lives directly” he said.

In Akosombo, where Pius Enam Hadzide grew up and spent a large part of his life, the story was no different. People within the Akosombo market, combine, Abume, etc were excited but full expectations of him. Asked why the people were so excited about his appointment, auntie Dora a vegetable seller in the Akosombo responded, “ohhh Pius, ni ho dwo, )boadi, )d) nipa nsu” to wit he is humble, respectful and caring.

The NYA has as its vision “to be a Statutory Institution of Reference in Youth Development Service” through its mission to provide an environment for youth participation in the cultural-socio-economic and political development using appropriate technology and highly-motivated professionals.

The newly appointed CEO of the NYA, is expected to “advocate, facilitate and ensure the mainstreaming of youth development issues into national development frameworks, plans and programmes in all sectors, garner relevant stakeholder interest and commitment to provide the youth with opportunities for skills training, employment, and market information and design appropriate collaboration and partnerships to strengthen the link between education and diversified productivity labour markets.
