I have never been to Germany – Amidu responds to Ken Agyapong

Former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu has denied claims by the Member of Parliament for Assin Central that he visited Germany for medical treatment.
He said he was not surprised that the Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong would “stoop that low” because of his history of “spewing lies at any person of integrity who tries to fight corruption”.

“I am not surprised that he would stoop that low to make any allegation without any foundation in fact or in truth. I have never been to Germany on any occasion let alone for a medical checkup. I don’t know any German hospital or any German clinic and therefore his allegations are false,” Amidu said.

Mr Amidu in an interview with Citi FM also challenged the MP to produce documents to show that he has ever been to Germany for medical treatment.

Amidu was responding to claims made by Mr Agyapong on the ‘Seat Show’ on Net 2 TV on Wednesday night. The controversial MP alleged that the Special Prosecutor (SP) has a medical problem for which reason he should not have been appointed.

He added that during the vetting process of Martin Amidu for the SP job, Mahama Ayariga, the MP for Bawku Central wanted to raise issues about Amidu’s medical records but John Dramani Mahama, the former President advised Ayariga to refrain from that.

“Martin Amidu thinks he’s a ‘tin god’. He should bring his medical records from Germany, I dare him. Bring your medical records from Germany to determine if you’re normal,” Agyapong said in a televised broadcast.

He continued: “Ayariga was going to take him on to produce his medical records and explain why he went to Germany [but] Mahama told him to stop. ‘Don’t raise this question at the Appointment Committee’. Mahama advised them not to raise that issue [about] the medical records and it was never brought up because they knew that one [day] this will happen.”

Attribution false

The SP said he was confident that “his son” Mahama Ayariga would corroborate his version of events because the latter would never make any false allegations against him.

“Mahama Ayariga will tell the public that he holds no medical record on me having visited Germany and I do not think that the attribution to Mahama Ayariga is true because Mahama Ayariga will never and I repeat never, make such false allegations against me as his father,” Amidu said.

“He would have been ostracized by the chiefs and people of the Kusal Traditional Area for such a blatant lie and I challenge him (Agyapong) to get Mahama Ayariga on the phone to confirm that he has documents proving that I have been to Germany for any type of treatment whatsoever”.

Urging former President John Mahama to speak to Mr Agyapong’s claims, Amidu questioned why his “simple” risk assessment report on the Agyapa Royalties deal has led to many lies being peddled about him.
