The North East Regional Branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has urged Mr Hopeson Adorye, a member of the party, to retract a comment he had made against Northerners regarding the party’s flagbearership contest.
Describing Mr Adorye’s comments as derogatory and hateful, the North East NPP said it was necessary for him to retract and apologise to ensure unity in the party.
In a video circulating on social media, Mr Hopeson Adorye, during a political health-walk in Kumasi, allegedly said the running mate or vice presidential position in the NPP was preserved for only Northerners.
In the video, the comments sought to suggest that a northerner could not contest for presidency on the ticket of the NPP, but only qualified to be running mate.
A statement signed by the North East Region NPP Communication Director, Amos Walibe, and copied to Graphic Online, said the comment had the tendency to disrupt the party’s quest to break the eight-year political cycle in the 2024 generation elections.

It said, “The comments are divisive and disrespectful and if Hopeson Adorye is a true patriot who really wishes that NPP breaks the 8, he should render an unqualified apology not only to the descendants of Dombo but also to those who are neither Busia, Danquah nor Dombo”.
“We further demand that Mr Alan Kojo Kyeremanten, in whose interest Mr Hopeson Adorye engaged in that bigotry, condemns this hateful comments and disassociate himself from it”, the statement noted.
It, therefore, called on the ranks and file of the NPP to be united and join forces to ensure the party achieves its aim of winning election 2024.

For Immediate Release
HOPESON ADORYE’S COMMENTS DURING A POLITICAL-HEALTH WALK IN KUMASI ARE INIMICAL TO NPP’S QUEST TO BREAKING THE 8
In a video circulating on social media, Mr Hopeson Adorye is heard very loud making comments to the effect that the the running mate or vice president position in the NPP is a preserve for the descendants of Dombo (Northerners). The comments sought to suggest that a northerner cannot ascend to the throne of presidency on the ticket of our beloved party the NPP in Ghana. This, we the descendants of Dombo find very insulting and we demand a retraction and apology. We further demand that Honourable Alan Kojo Kyeremanten, in whose interest Mr Hopeson Adorye engaged in that bigotry, condemns this hateful comments from his campaign Director of Operations, Hopeson Adorye and disassociate himself from it.
If the presidential slot in NPP is supposed to be rotated between the Busias and the Danquahs, why did Honourable Alan Kyeremanten, Dr Konadu Apraku, Dr Addo Kufour among others contest the 2007 NPP presidential primaries just after President Kufour served 8 years as president? Did Alan not know that it the turn of the Danquahs? And if Hopeson Adorye consigns Northerners to the position of Vice president in NPP and reserves the presidency for Busias and the Danquahs, where does he place those from the Western, Western North, Central, Volta, Greater Accra and Oti regions? Or people from those regions have no right to contest for the flagbearership position in NPP? Hopeson Adorye probably did not think deep before making these divisive comments. If Hopeson Adorye is a true patriot who really wishes that NPP breaks the 8, he should be full of regrets by now and should be preparing to render an unqualified apology not only to the descendants of Dombo but also to those who are neither Busia, Danquah nor Dombo.
I don’t need to remind Hopeson Adorye that if right thinking people in the party did not prevail upon Honourable Alan Kyeremanten to rescind his decision to resign from the party, he wouldn’t be a member of the New Patriotic Party today to even be contemplating to occupy any leadership position in the party.
As a political party, we need to be told that the NDC is seriously praying for us (NPP) to vindicate the former president H.E John Dramani Mahama. On a campaign platform in 2016, the former president chastised H.E Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for being a member of the NPP. The former president did not mince words when he told Dr Bawumia, then running mate to Nana Addo that the New Patriotic Party would never give him the opportunity to run for president in this country once he was not an Akan. If by God’s grace H.E Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia becomes the NPP’S flagbearer for the 2024 elections, the former president will be hugely embarrassed and so knowing the embarrassment that awaits John Mahama, the NDC is doing everything possible to ensure that the Vice president doesn’t get the endorsement of the delegates of the NPP to be our flagbearer.
Going into the 2024 elections, the NPP as a political party will definitely choose someone who will give the presumptive flagbearer of the NDC a run for his money. The delegates of the NPP will surely go for someone who is competent, someone who has sacrificed so much for the party when the party needed that most. The delegates will choose someone who has a good track record of contributing so much to the NPP’S victory in 2016.
…… Signed ……
