West Mamprusi: Walewale call for peace after MCE attack on live radio

The Municipal chief executive (MCE) for West Mamprusi, youth leaders, and assembly members in Walewale have called for peace after the MCE was attacked by some residents during a live radio interview in Nalerigu, the regional capital.

On 12 January 2023, some alleged NPP supporters, stopped the MCE, Issahak Aremeyaw Basintale Somo Lucky, in the middle of an interview on Tizaa Radio.

The angry youth stormed the studio of the radio station in the middle of the interview and moved the MCE outside, however, the police intervened swiftly and put the situation under control. The anger of the youth follows the MCE’s comments during the interview on the regional minister’s commitment to the development of the region.

The angry youth of Nalerigu have accused the minister of diverting developmental projects to the West Mamprusi Municipality instead of the regional capital in the East Mamprusi Municipality.

They believe this diversion of developmental projects is because the regional minister comes from the West Mamprusi Municipality.

On 16 January 2023, the MCE, youth leaders, and assembly members from Walewale held a press conference to call for peace following the incident. The MCE asked the youth to unite for the development of the region. He emphasised that out of respect for the overlord of the Mampurugu Traditional Area, who is in Nalerigu, peace should be maintained.

His advice was to the youth of both Nalerigu and Walewale. He added that the security services had been informed about the intention of the youth of Walewale to retaliate an attack in Nalerigu.

The assembly member for Nayirifongu electoral area in Walewale, Mohammed Rabiu Jabaa, urged the youth to calm down. He added that the incident was perpetrated by a few youth from Nalerigu but it had tarnished the image of the people of Nalerigu.

The press release brought the NPP and the NDC together at the Municipal assembly in Walewale to find a lasting solution to the misunderstanding.
