The vice president of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF), Fuseini Dauda, has commended former world champion, Richard Oblitey Commey, for moving up to the super lightweight division to enhance his world title chances.
He said such a move would inure to his benefit by restoring his boxing career.

Mr Dauda confirmed that Commey struggled to make the lightweight and that drained the energy and strength in him when he was due for a fight.

“If you look at Commey during fights in the lightweight division, he appears very emaciated and I think that is not good for him at all and it hurts him,” he told Graphic Sports in an exclusive interview in Accra last Friday.

Commey, 35, was defeated by Ukrainian Vasyl Lomachenko in their lightweight bout in the United States last December via a unanimous victory.

The Ghanaian, who is based in the United States, has fought 34 times professionally, winning 30 and losing four times.

He will be up against Puerto Rican, Jose Pedraza, in the super lightweight division on July 23.

“He cannot stay in one division forever; he has proved his worth in the lightweight division and must move on,” Mr Fuseini noted.

Mr Dauda urged Commey to take his chances and continue to fight at different weight divisions.

“All his peers: Teofimo Lopez, Robert Easter Jnr have moved up in weight so why not him. He must go on and move up,” he explained.

He called on Commey’s trainers to prepare him well for the super lightweight division to ensure a sound victory in his debut fight.
