WNBA and NBA criticise Griner’s conviction: It’s unjustified and unfortunate

VBrittney Griner’s agent believes WNBA star is being used as a ‘political pawn’
WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert and NBA commissioner Adam Silver criticised on Friday the Russian court’s verdict on Brittney Griner’s case.

The WNBA star was sentenced to nine years in jail for drug trafficking, but Engelbert and Silver called for her immediate return to the United States.

“Today’s verdict and sentencing is unjustified and unfortunate but not unexpected and Brittney Griner remains wrongly detained,” Silver and Engelbert said in a joint statement that was shared on Twitter.

“The WNBA and NBA’s commitment to her safe return has not wavered and it is our hope that we are near the end of this process of finally bringing BG home to the United States.”

Meanwhile, US president Joe Biden demanded that Russia “immediately” release the basketball player, and promised that his government will continue to work “tirelessly” to ensure her return to the country.

At the end of the month, the Biden administration made a proposal to Russia to secure the release of Griner and former Marine Paul Whelan in what, according to CNN, would be a prisoner exchange with Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, who is imprisoned in the US.

Griner was arrested last February at a Moscow airport with cannabis oil in her suitcase. The athlete was sentenced in a Jimki court on Thursday.
